What is a food supplement?
According to the Ministry of Health the food supplements are “food products intended to supplement the diet, representing a concentrated source of nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals or other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect. These may be, but not exclusively, amino acids, essential fatty acids, fibers and extracts of vegetable origin, both mono- and polycompounds, in pre-established doses”..
Are food supplements and nutraceuticals the same thing?
Yes, they are. In particular, nutraceuticals (a term composed by “nutrition” and “pharmaceutical”, coined in 1989 by American nutritionist and biochemist Stephen De Felice to indicate a food, or part of a food, that has a beneficial function on human health ) are foods that, containing certain constituents, can legitimately claim, in accordance with food regulations, specific beneficial effects on the organism, regarding also the reduction of a disease risk factor. In this sense, food supplements, as concentrated source of nutrients or other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect, are equivalent to nutraceuticals, but realized in pre-dispensed form, such as tablets, capsules, vials, sachets, etc.
What is the difference between a drug and a food supplement?
Food supplements favors well-being conditions, assisting the physiological functions of the organism, while drugs restore, correct and change physiological functions, carrying out a pharmacological, immunological and metabolic action.
